Street photography – remarkable artwork – New York City²/Lost. “A lot of the people seem somehow lost to me, either geographically, mentally or even physically. It’s that second before they recognise you, taking the picture, somehow giving you an intimate moment with a person you never gonna see again in your life. They open up, like it would be the most private place, in fact being the least private environment one can imagine”. Part of the series Street Photo Mono Graph. (Photo by Rokas Jankus/SIPA Contest)

Documentary and photojournalism – honourable mention – Virunga. Rangers patrol Lake Edward in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are regular patrols as well as intelligence-gathering, owing to incursions by Mai Mai militia groups on the lake, which was once the home of the largest hippopotamus population in the world. The hippos are central to the wellbeing of the lake ecosystem, but their numbers have been decimated by decades of fighting in the region. (Photo by Brent Stirton/SIPA Contest)

The beauty of nature – winner – Green Light Forest. A mountain path through a forest is illuminated by a multitude of “sparkling” fireflies, giving the landscape an almost fairytale atmosphere. The insects’ bioluminescence is part of the mating ritual, at the end of which the eggs are laid. Pollution hinders the reproduction of fireflies, and it is increasingly difficult to see shows like this one. Wufeng Township, Hsinchu, Taiwan. (Photo by Shirley Wung/SIPA Contest)

Under 20 – winner – Buzzard at Dusk. “I was out photographing the sunset when I noticed the clouds were beginning to become really atmospheric and moody. A buzzard was originally on a post but it saw me and flew off into a tree. I positioned the buzzard in the light patch of the cloud, and underexposed to keep the rest of the image darker to draw your eye into the buzzard”. (Photo by Ben Pulletz/SIPA Contest)

The beauty of nature – honourable mention – Droopy Eyes. “During lockdown, I was fortunate enough to be in a game reserve and was staying in a house close to a small ravine. I noticed that there was a lot of movement and tracks towards a water source in this ravine. I set up a camera with a few light sources in and among a lot of ruby gnidia flowers that had just come up after the first rains of the season. Also, the ravine was filled with old dry leaves, so it created quite a nice diverse frame with the colour”. Makgokolo game reserve, South Africa. (Photo by Johannes Lochner/SIPA Contest)
